Paddlesports SASU

Set up in 2022, the District Paddlesports SASU (Scout Active Support Unit) aims to get Beavers/Cubs/Scout and Explorers out on the water every week during the core paddling season (April to August). We have a small team of adult volunteers and young leaders who are keen to get kids out on the water. If you would like to join our team, please contact us ASAP. To make a booking, please check out calendar below.

For the 2026 season, we are offering Kayaking and Canoeing and may be able to offer Raft Building although that is not on the booking system this year so ask if this is wanted. This season, we’re offering sessions as follows:

Squirrels: Rafted Canoeing sessions (Thursdays 90 minutes long) from Buxworth Basin. Can be split in to two 45 minute sessions.

Beavers: Rafted Canoeing sessions (Thursdays 2 hours long) from Buxworth Basin. Can be split in to two x 1 hour sessions.

Cubs: Canoeing and Kayaking sessions (Tuesdays 2 hours long) from Combs. Can be split in to two x 1 hour sessions.

Scouts and Explorers: Canoe and Kayaking sessions (Tuesdays 2 hours long) from Combs. Not recommended for splitting.

Cubs, Scouts and Explorers we aim to complete the Paddlesposts Level 1 badge. If you have participants who want a higher level badge, we can accommodate this too so talk to us in advance.

Notes:

  1. We need to know as far in advance as possible how many non-swimmers we have as defined by scouting rules. Please download and read the booking information before booking.
  2. We give priority to scouting sections within our district first however scouting sections from other districts and guiding sections are also welcome if we have availability.
  3. Our Kayaks are Cub/Scout sized and we can usually accommodate someone up to around 5 foot 10 in height and of average build. If you have a larger participant in your group, you may want to consider a Canoe session instead since they are not size restricted.
  4. We ask for help getting out the canoes at the start and also ask for help at the end of the session to put everything away. We are all volunteers so we appreciate your assistance.
