In March, Cubs from across the District were given a wooden block, axles, wheels, and a challenge: make the fastest balsawood car you can! In their week-to-week sessions, the Cubs designed, shaped, assembled, and decorated their cars, allowing them to develop a variety of skills and work toward their Artist and Scientist activity badges as well as the ‘Our Skills’ challenge award.
It was great to see such a variety of designs for the cars including aerodynamic features and artistic details.

Each pack then had their own group heat where the cars went head-to-head to see which were the fastest. Following a few races (and a bit of maths courtesy of a spreadsheet), the fastest three cars were announced and progressed to the District final.
The Cubs all showed great sportsmanship and cheered each other on wonderfully!
At the District final, 26 cars took to the track for the final time in the inter-pack competition. Congratulations to our podium finishers:
1st – Owen (1st Chinley – Tuesday)
2nd – Isaac (1st Chapel – Kinder)
3rd – Mason (17th Buxton)

Thank you to Martin, Oscar, and Peter who have run the competition and visited each pack to run the pack heats. Thank you also to the pack leaders and parents who have supported the Cubs in the creation of their cars.
