This weekend, we joined the birthday celebrations with the Squirrel and Beaver Birthday Bash. 40 Squirrels and Beavers from across the district came together at Gradbach Scout Camp, and took on a variety of activities before staying the night under canvas.
To get things started, everyone met their activity groups and played a few games to get to know one another. With name learning complete, it was time to set up camp, which for many, was their first time putting up a tent. All of the Squirrels and Beavers got stuck in and the camping areas were ready in no time at all!
Following a packed lunch from home, it was time to start the afternoon’s activities. Rotating around 45 minute sessions with their groups, the campers tried their hand at fire lighting, outdoor cooking, leather craft, impression making, leaf bashing, felt crown making, and gold panning. There was something for everyone with lots of new skills to be learnt.
The evening started with tea before being rounded off with a campfire in the campfire hollow. And what campfire wouldn’t be complete without songs, smores, and hot chocolate!? The Squirrels and Beavers returned to their camping areas and silence fell across the camp.
Sunday brought a few unwelcome showers but, after locating everyone’s waterproof, we powered on through! Bags were packed and breakfast was eaten before cardboard binocular making and an animal hunt around Gradbach. The weekend was brought to a close with a visit to the camp shop.
A massive thank you goes to all the incredible volunteers who’ve helped run this fantastic camp! Without them, the fun, laughs, and memories wouldn’t have been possible.
