Paddlesports SASU

Set up in 2022, the District Paddlesports SASU (Scout Active Support Unit) aims to get Beavers/Cubs/Scout and Explorers out on the water every week during the core paddling season (April to August). We have a small team of adult volunteers who are keen to get kids out on the water. If you would like to join our team, please contact us ASAP. To make a booking, please check out calendar below.

For the 2024 season, we can offer Kayaking, Canoeing and Raft Building. We run a two hour sessions and aim to complete the Paddlesposts Level 1 badge. If you have participants who want a higher level badge, we can accommodate this too so talk to us in advance. We paddle mainly on Combs Reservoir on a Tuesday evening along with some Monday evenings and some Saturdays.

Notes:

  1. We take Beavers in rafted canoes because they are more stable so if you want to bring Beavers, book a Canoe session and ensure you put details in the notes.
  2. Normal sessions are 2 hours. For Scouts and Explorers, that’s about right however for Cubs and Beavers that might be longer than they can manage so we can split a session in to two 1 hour sessions back to back, if requested, with children swapping over half way through. The second session may have to put on wet gear though!
  3. We give priority to scouting sections within our district first however scouting sections from other districts and guiding sections are also welcome if we have availability.
  4. Our Kayaks are Scout sized and we can usually accommodate someone up to around 5 foot 10 in height and of average build. If you have a larger participant in your group, you may want to consider a Canoe session instead since they are not size restricted.
  5. We ask for help getting out the canoe at the start and also ask for help at the end of the session to put everything away.
